Why did you join the SLR program?
I originally fell into doing other street teaming on accident and ended up really loving it. When I heard about the SLR program, I saw it as an opportunity to expand my knowledge on how grassroots marketing works and to gain more experience in music in general. |
What are the best parts of the SLR program?
Being able to meet so many people and make so many connections. It’s a very hands-on program and as long as you are dedicated and willing to put forth the effort, it’s a great experience and a great way to expand your knowledge about the music industry, as well as your network. |
What are the challenging parts of the SLR program?
It is very time consuming and can be hard to balance with your schedule at times. You must be willing to spend the time and effort to put forth your best work, or else this program will not be worth it for you. |
What did learn from this internship that helped you in future work?
I had a marketing internship with AEG Live and one of the assignments I was given was to put together a street marketing campaign for 7 different dates of an upcoming tour. I wasn’t given any other instruction, except that I had to get it done. Being an SLR has taught me how to figure things out on my own. Grassroots marketing teaches you the solid foundations of marketing that you can’t necessarily get in the classroom. |
Would you recommend this program to other students? Why or why not?
Definitely. It’s so much fun getting to talk to people and spread the word about music that I care about. I love how this program can be as amazing or as boring as you want it to be. Everyone can take what they want out of it. It’s easy to just go through each week, do the work, submit your report and be done with it. But the great part about this program is that it is so much more than that. It’s a program that allows you to create opportunities for yourself. When you’re out promoting, you can meet and talk with so many people, like the touring staff, indie retail managers, and all of the great guest speakers we get in conference calls. It’s a program that allows you to gain real music industry experience while growing as a person and a professional. |
